It's quite fascinating how so many of the debates which have raged in
cola over the years are now starting to spill out across the web in
general. The debates regarding packages have been one of the major
ones; clearly, every year which goes by sees each of the big distros
grow in size, with typically Debian at the pinaccle, supporting more
architectures, with more packages, than anything else, but perhaps
progressing the most slowly because of this.
I would have thought, now, that the best bet for Apple and Microsoft
would be to try to squeeze some last value from their OSes by
encouraging free-software distributions for OSX and Vista. In the past,
there was a debian-windows port, although it did seem to die due to a
lack of interest; perhaps it would be worth Microsoft's efforts to put
some of their own people on doing such a thing? They could hardly be
wasting more effort than some of the disastrous things Microsoft have
done recently, and it could just sell them a few more OS units.
