[News] Benchmark: Closed Source Graphics Drivers vs. Open Source Graphics Drivers

X.Org 7.2: ATI Open v. Closed Drivers

,----[ Quote ]
| With respect for the differences between the X300 and X800, the
| results had not changed much. The ATI/AMD fglrx driver continues to
| lead in the frame-rate performance over the open-source Radeon
| driver. In Enemy Territory the fglrx driver was over twice as
| fast, while in Unreal Tournament 2004 the performance difference
| for the fglrx driver spiked at 460% faster.
|
| While these fglrx drivers are faster for gamers, the open-source
| drivers continue to boast the advantages of desktop effects
| support (AIGLX), inclusion with a majority of recent
| distributions, and simply the fact that the drivers are
| open-source.

Nouveau: glxgears on NV4x

,----[ Quote ]
| The exciting announcement, however, is word that the 3D driver is
| functioning with NV4x hardware and glxgears is now running. However,
| glxgears still has issues with pre-NV4x hardware. With glxgears now
| reported to function on NV4x hardware with Nouveau, we could not
| help but to try this. We had built everything from git on January
| 28, 2006, and yes, glxgears was running! The GPU was a NVIDIA
| GeForce 6150 and the Linux distribution used was Fedora Core 6.

,----[ Quote ]
| So when will the Nouveau driver be ready? The Wiki states that the
| project should be mostly usable in autumn 2007. Keith Packard had
| previously expressed hope that the driver would be ready in time
| for the X.Org 7.3 release.
