[News] Microsoft: Advertisement & Hype versus Sobering Reality

Then and now: Assessing Ballmer's Vista comments

,----[ Quote ]
| Consider the contrasting tone of Ballmer's comments on stage at the
| Windows Vista launch event three weeks ago:
|
| "We think in the next three months we'll probably sell five times
| as many copies of Windows Vista as we ever did [Windows 95] in the
| equivalent period of time"
|
| [...]
|
| Now compare the comments above with those he made to analysts
| this past week, as excerpted below...

Ballmer's nine areas of guaranteed growth

,----[ Quote ]
| With a few exceptions, Ballmer's list is basically a rundown of the
| areas where Microsoft has already been making money. The only really
| interesting part of the list is what is not on it. As Mary Jo Foley
| highlighted, the list omits Windows Live, an area that Microsoft has
| been heavily promoting over the last year. In October, Ballmer was
| even quoted as saying, "The most important thing is the Live
| platform." And if you're wondering where the Zune and IPTV are,
| they were included in another list provided by Ballmer. He said
| that both the Zune and IPTV would be areas of high growth, but
| that neither were immediate money makers.
