| Five years ago, at VoiceCon 2002, this author predicted that Linux
| would replace Windows as the operating system of choice for
| IP-telephony system call control. There are a few remaining holdouts,
| such as NEC Unified and Nortel (although it should be noted that the
| latter's carrier-class CS2100 softswitch is Linux-based). But most of
| today's enterprise-level flagship offerings are Linux is now
| established as the OS of choice based on a Linux operating system.
| Cisco was the most prominent system supplier last year to hop on
| the Linux bandwagon.
|
| There are several reasons why system designers have moved from
| Windows to Linux. According to Nigel Trueman, a member of the
| Siemens HiPath 8000 product management team, Linux is "a key component"
| of Siemens' open communications strategy. "Siemens tests showed that
| Linux offers best-in-class portability and flexibility, allowing
| HiPath 8000 to be delivered on a variety of different vendors'
| hardware platforms while maintaining a rich feature set with
| minimal need to modify code at the application level," he said.
|
| "In practice, Linux has proven to be a rich and powerful platform
| which offers high-end functionality, reliability, security and
| stability," Trueman concluded.
