"Mr. Raymond believes desktop Linux is entering into a critical period,
noting that historically, users have shifted operating systems during
periods of fundamental changes in hardware platforms."

Well people did move from MSDOS to MS-Windows when the price of memory and
color CRTs dropped enough to make them affordable, but just what is
happening now that is seen as some kind of hardware platform watershed?
Wishing and hoping will not make it happen and ESR isn't saying what he sees
beyond that.

"In June, along with AOpen and Mirus Innovations, Linspire announced the
availability of the Linspire Mini Koobox, the first small form-factor Linux
machine on the market. Starting at just $399 after $100 mail-in rebate, the
Mini Koobox is based on an Intel platform built by AOpen and comes with a
full Microsoft file-compatible office suite, DVD player and DVD-playing
software, music and photo management software, Internet applications, e-mail
and instant messaging capabilities. The Linspire Mini Koobox is now being
sold online through Mirus Innovations as part of its Koobox line of desktop
computers. For more information about the Mini Koobox, visit www.koobox.com
or visit many of our partners at www.linspire.com/featured"

The koobox features a 1.5GHz Celeron, 256Mb RAM, and 40Gb harddrive and a
DVD/CDRW for a miniscule $499 with $100 mail in rebate. Microsoft might be
quaking in their collective boots save for Dell's counter offer of an AMD
Speron 3400+ with 512 Mb RAM anda 160GBhard drive and a DVD/CD. Dell throws
in a year in-home warranty that is $59 extra for the koobox and Dell
provides free shipping, which is not free with koobox. All in all, you get
a lot less with Linux although you do have the satisfaction of having
deprived Mr. Gates of a license fee. Sound like a good deal?
