There are multiple issues here.  It is indeed far easier
to download software from a Windows-website, and have
it auto-install, presumably by using an ActiveX control
on the website itself to run the downloaded file (if
such be even needed; IE can execute .EXE files without
difficulty, though it might put up a "do you trust this
guy?" requester).

Safer?  Probably not.  But definitely easier.  It's safe
to say that Linux distros will never have this particular
capability, though many offer specific downloaders which
can connect to the distro's website (or mirrors thereof).
For example, Debian offers dpkg, Fedora rpm, Gentoo emerge.

Or one can use 'tar' or 'unzip' manually, if one wants to
use that grummy old CLI thingy that everyone's scared of. :-)

(Everyone, that is, who is not a touch-typist, presumably.)
