Has the free desktop revolution arrived?

| An oft-trumpeted home triumph in technology discussion sites is
| the conversion of friends or loved ones to a GNU/Linux desktop.
| "I was tired of fixing Windows on my kid's/grandmother's/in-law's
| computer, so I set up a Linux desktop. They love it! It's so easy
| to use, and I don't have to do anything to maintain it! No ad-ware
| or viruses, and best of all, it's free!" It sounds almost too good
| to be true.... has the free desktop revolution arrived? I recently
| found myself in a position to find out first hand.

| My wife's final words on the subject: "I hope you put [Ubuntu] on
| my computer after you fix it."

2007 Forecast: Open Source
,----[ Quote ]
| So in summary, the Open Source story is, like the curate's egg,
| good in parts. Linux is still a growing force and the commercial
| use of Open Source is becoming increasingly common in many areas.
| There was even a recommendation to use it from the EC recently,
| which stated quite clearly that the evidence is that Open Source
| reduces costs. Well, duh!
