It is comforting to know that an alternative to Java does exist, however.
Mono seems to work quite well and is apparently being professionally
maintained and extended. As to cross-platform, there is really nothing to
achieve in that regard. It is far better to optimize for the extensively
used platform, Windows, that to waste time and effort on generating
workstation/client applications on a server OS that will hardly ever be used
for such applications.
