Microsoft has been losing prominent executives as well.

Dell's secret Linux fling

,----[ Quote ]
| Dell's love affair with Linux is a clandestine affair these days,
| conducted in secret, away from disapproving eyes. But now the pair
| have been spotted in China.
|
| When Michael Dell first saw the web-footed beauty, he fell head over
| heels. Six years ago Dell pledged a series of strategic investments
| in Linux companies, including Eazel and Red Hat. The romance
| attracted the disapproval of Microsoft however, and barely lasted
| weeks. Very quietly, Dell dumped the bird.
|
| It later emerged that Microsoft's OEM enforcer Joachim Kempin had
| promised Steve Ballmer that he'd be putting the screws on PCb
| uilders, or "hitting the OEMs harder" in his words.

Microsoft 'killed Dell Linux' - States

,----[ Quote ]
| The States' remedy hearing opened in DC yesterday, and States attorney
| Steven Kuney produced a devastating memo from Kempin, then in charge of
| Microsoft's OEM business, written after Judge Jackson had ordered his
| break-up of the company. Kempin raises the possibility of threatening
| Dell and other PC builders which promote Linux.
|
| "I'm thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux.
| ... they should do a delicate dance," Kempin wrote to Ballmer, in what is
| sure to be a memorable addition to the phrases ("knife the baby", "cut off
| the air supply") with which Microsoft enriched the English language in the
| first trial. Unlike those two, this is not contested.
|
| [...]
|
| Earlier memos described that it was "untenable" that a key Microsoft
| partner was promoting Linux. Kuney revealed that Dell disbanded its Linux
| business unit in early 2001. Dell quietly pulled Linux from its desktop PCs
| in the summer of 2001, IDG's Ashlee Vance discovered subsequently, six
| months after we heard Michael Dell declare his love of Linux on the desktop
| the previous winter.
|
| Compaq was also mentioned in other memos, with Microsoft taking the line
| that OEMs should "meet demand but not help create demand" for Linux.

Dell Woes Continue With Quarterly Report Delay

,----[ Quote ]
| Dell's recent results indicate the company is facing a number of

Dell tried to embrace Linux, but it may be a a case of too little, too little
(they feat retaliation from Microsoft, which can threaten and punish through
profit margins).

Dell Open Source Community Contributions Overview

,----[ Quote ]
| As a result of these activities, we've been able to engage the
| Linux community directly through active support and participation inL
| inux conferences such as LinuxWorld Expo, the Ottawa Linux Symposium,
| the Linux Kernel Summit, Red Hat Summit, and Novell Brainshare. We're
| involved in helping build the worldwide Linux community, such as Matt
| Domsch's involvement with the Fedora Project Board. This is our
| execution of the "it just works" motto our customers expect.

Vista Runs Smooth Only on 2G Memory

,----[ Quote ]
| However, Dell CEO Kevin Rollins suggested otherwise on Thursday, 26 Oct at
| a speech at Shanghai's Jiaotong University. "I think they tell you maybe 1
| gig of memory is OK. No, two gigs of memory would be great."
|
| This echoes with my own experience with Vista RC2. With only 1G of
| RAM, there are many disk activities indicating heavy disk swap, a
| symptom of lack of memory in the system.

Linux on More Dell Client Systems?

,----[ Quote ]
| As highlighted in Michael Brown's post, we put a lot of effort into our
| Linux offerings on our workstations and servers.
|
| On the client side, our efforts are much more behind-the-scenes. We
| recognize the chicken-and-egg problem though: it has to work before
| many people will want to buy it; and it won't work unless effort is
| put into it before people start buying it. So we're cracking the
| egg, not quite making omlettes.
|
| No surprise, our Linux engineers run a wide variety of Linux distros
| on our own desktops and notebooks, and fix bugs we encounter in
| daily use.

Dell will Partition Your Hard Drive for You

,----[ Quote ]
| I was buying some Dell Latitude laptops for my company today, and I
| noticed a relatively new option in their system configuration page:
|
| For $10 Dell will now partition your hard drive for you! Resizing a
| "live" windows partition can be tricky, so that $10 may save you all
| the time it would take to reformat the drive, and reinstall windows.
| The options they give you are relatively reasonable too. I see this as
| a nod towards all us dual boot enthusiast.

Is it Dell vs. SPEC? or Dell vs. Linux?

,----[ Quote ]
| In exploring SPEC.org's site for yesterday's blog I came across something
| interesting: specifically a configuration problem with a benchmark result
| for the dual Xeon, eight core, 2.66Ghz Dell 2950.
|
| [...]
|
| Since we're actually still in "Dec 06" what this suggests to me is
| that Dell's left hand is decidedly more enthusiastic about Linux in
| general and Red Hat in particular than its right - meaning in practice
| that they prefer seeing potential sales go away to correcting errors in
| their configurator.

Hasee PCs Preinstall Linux Desktop

,----[ Quote ]
| Co-Create, founded in 2001, is a Beijing-based software company
| specializing in development, production and application of Linux
| and the cross-platform office suite sponsored by 8 Chinese
| well-known IT companies.
|
| Co-Create made great achievements in 2006 thanks to the
| regulations on the pre-installation of computer operating
| system software. Many computer manufacturers, including Lenovo,
| HP and Dell all cooperated with Co-Create. 23 Dell computer
| models sold in China all completely preinstall Linux operating
| systems.
