,----[ Quote ]
| Apache Group founder and primary developer Brian Behlendorf,
| Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Creative Commons' Lawrence
| Lessig will head the list of speakers lined up for the first
| Digital Freedom Expo to be held at the University of the Western
| Cape (UWC) in April.
|
| The expo, run by the University of the Western Cape, aims to
| "promote the use of free software and free or open content,"
| says UWC's Derek Keats.
|
| "Free and open source software (FOSS) is no longer just the
| domain of hackers and idealists," says Keats.
|
| "Free software applications, tools and operating systems are
| now a critical part of our computing and communications
| infrastructure. It is not just the software itself which is
| important, but also the development methodologies, culture
| and business practices that have sprung up around it."

Wikipedia like search engine to use Apache Lucene - Nutch

,----[ Quote ]
| The search engine, code-named Wikiasari, would combine open source
| technology and human intervention to deliver more relevant results
| than the algorithm-based systems used today, Wales said Tuesday.
| "Human intelligence is still the best thing we have, so let's let
| humans do what they do best, and computers do what they do best."
|
| Wales says that the reason for Wikiasari is that search as we know
| it is broken: "It is broken for the same reason that proprietary
| software is always broken: lack of freedom, lack of community,
| lack of accountability, lack of transparency."
