Microsoft Vista's China debut raises piracy issue

| "There will be reduced functionality that will occur if you runn
| on-genuine versions of the software," said Di Valerio.
|
| Some of Vista's cooler features such as 3-D graphics to create
| translucent windows that appear to float above the background
| screen will be impaired, while hardware functions would also
| be reduced, Di Valerio said.

It doesn't seem as though they truly crack down on piracy where Linux is a
great threat.

Microsoft seals its Windows and opens the door to Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Now comes the really interesting question. With Vista's activation
| technology, Microsoft has the power to stamp out piracy everywhere. But
| will it choose to do so everywhere? After all, if folks in China or
| Thailand or Ethiopia have to pay for Vista, they won't be able to run
| it because they won't be able to afford the licence fee. In which case
| they may finally wake up to the attractions of free software such as
| Linux - and it's easy to imagine what that will do to Microsoft's
| plans for world domination.
|
| It's a delicious prospect: Microsoft impaling itself on the horns
| of a dilemma it has created for itself. Roll on Thursday.

Vista Anti-piracy Effort Will Drive People to Linux?

See the third comment.

,----[ Quote ]
| Jodey Grist :
|
| Actually I'm running linux right now because of all the activation crap,
| and the fact I dont want to spend 325 quid on a full featured OS (oh and
| UAC is the worst thing ever). Vista isnt even all that good for 5 years
| worth of development. I decided to try Linux out, and am typing this
| message from it right now, it's very impressive, and the only thing I
| cant do in it, is play games, so those comments are certainly true for me!
