[News] Campbell Computer Services Recommending Linux

Should I upgrade to Windows Vista?

,----[ Quote ]
| Every day my customers ask me how they can prevent their computer
| from getting massively infected with viruses and spyware again.
| I simply tell them they can't as long as they use Windows. They
| could get an Apple (expensive), or install Linux.
|
| I personally gravitate to installing Linux. I have used it for
| a few years and I am comfortable with it. I never expect the
| normal computer user to take my advice and use Linux because
| of the learning curve involved. But here comes Vista and Office
| 2007. Now the playing field has been leveled. Either Linux or
| Vista will require a learning curve. Here's where I break
| away from Microsoft Windows Vista. As long as you use Windows,
| even Vista, you will be plagued by viruses and spyware. You will
| also be stuck on the upgrade treadmill. Either buy a new PC for
| Vista, or spend at least $300 on upgrades. Another factor to
| consider is the cost of the software. You could pay from $129
| for an upgrade, to $499 for a full install. Either way, that
| cost doesn't include the cost of upgrading all of your other
| software. Much of your existing software isn't compatible with
| Vista. I tried the beta of Vista and instantly lost the use
| of my all-in-one HP Printer. You can try a bootable CD with
| Ubuntu Linux to test hardware compatibility before installing
| it. Ubuntu has worked flawlessly with all of my hardware.
|
| My recommendation: Install Ubuntu Linux. It's user friendly,
| free, doesn't require a hardware upgrade, and best of all you
| can say astalavista to viruses and spyware. It even comes
| with a free Office clone called OpenOffice. OpenOffice is
| compatible with Office file formats.
