Another thought: for site popularity/traffic, PageRank is just one among many
factors to consider. The PR update is not magic pill that will change
something overnight. Moreover, if your site expands, PR can get 'diluted', so
it's not very meaningful. I'm personally interested in timing of PR updates
because it heralds and alarms about quirks and noise in advance. To the few
people who actually have PR visible (most surfers don't even know what
Netcraft or Alexa is), this measure can be seen as a poor indicator/gauge of
popularity. Some of the Web's busiest hubs have PR3/4 for all sorts of reasons
(subscription required to access content other than the front page, dilution,
locality, audience, etc).
