I have two areas of experiences with Google apps.

First is with a supplier that we use, we log into an area and our buyer can
get information on availability. That works well. He can also receive and
leave messages for the supplier, which he says gets better and more
reliable response than an email, because the items that he wants he can
simply tick off a list so there is less room for errors (the items he buys
are various stages of partially manufactured goods, so he picks out those
that are at the stage that he currently wants).

The other side was myself and some testers looking at this for our sales
reps before we fully commited ourselves to another system.

The problem with the google apps isn't the apps, nor in their marriage with
each other. The problem is the desktop itself.

The initial setup I did for the 5 testers and myself, I only did the one tab
with the office apps links, word processor, callendar, spreadsheet,
messaging. Plus a few little helpers like clocks etc. I must say that some
of those little helpers are very nice. The 'ToDo' pad is one of the first
of that kind that is genuinely helpfull because of the way it is done.

But I wasn't keen right from the start on the idea of the users getting
access to hundreds of little toys and games. I have no real idea of the
security level behind these toys. Of cause there is the usual java level,
but the ease at which these toys can take users to unsafe places puts me
off the idea.

I wouldn't be worried about this so much if all users were on Linux and
until the reports of Firefoxes difficulties within the weaker Windows I
might have been confident of them using FF on Windows for this, but on IE?
No, it just doesn't seem right to me. Maybe it's the pessimist in me, but I
didn't like the feel of it. Once your users see them they will have a look
and they will add new tabs and millions of little gadgets and games.
