Microsoft's Latest Webcam Doesn't Pan Out

| The host of image effects available through the LifeCam dashboard are less
| impressive. Many are cutesy overlaid animations such as plants growing or a
| spaceship floating around at the top of the screen. They're fun for a minute,
| but not nearly as useful or interesting as the ability to drop a blue screen
| in the background, change the color scheme, or otherwise morph the image.

| Among the grim financial figures were a few nuggets of interesting news.
| Apparently the EDD is beefing up its staff, since the company's report says
| that "headcount-related costs increased 15 percent [for the year], driven by
| a 9 percent increase in headcount and an increase in salaries and benefits
| for existing headcount, partially offset by a decrease in stock-based
| compensation expense."

Design flaws, defects, and faults

| I don't know if these numbers are anything like the actual situation with the
| Xbox 360. The reality could be better or worse. I can't infer enough from
| Microsoft's behavior; the return rates are obviously high enough to trigger
| this public admission of a problem, yet they apparently aren't high enough to
| justify a recall.
|
| But I am quite sure that Microsoft has not said anything to justify these
| claims that all Xbox 360s are "faulty" or "defective," and I think it's
| important to understand the difference between these terms and Microsoft's
| use of "design issue" or CRN Australia's use of "design flaw." The truth is
| important, and words are all we have to explain the truth to each other.
