Schmidt is on Apple's board, so they won't screw Apple. In fact, Schmidt was
one of the first people to wave and boast an iPhone.

Google won't sell Linux for the same reason IBM does not. SoC seems to be
helping a bit, but they still ought to port more applications to Linux and
release more source code which might be valuable.
As for the phone (or even desktop O/S), they only need something that can
establish a connection where it is available. That said, being too dependent
on Web-based apps makes the phone (or laptop) useless at times. They work with
Mozilla on offline Web-based apps enablement. Firefox 3.0 will be the start.
There's also Gears.

Google is like Apple in that respect, but Microsoft is worse. Microsoft doesn't
hide things. It lies. It lies about dates, about products and features
(vapourware) and it lies about its failures (e.g. Vista, XBox360, Zune sales).
Secrecy != deception.
