[News] [Linux] Linus Torvalds Upset with Sun's 'Openness'

Dual-Licensing Linux Kernel with GPL V2 and GPL V3

,----[ Quote ]
| [Linus:] Dual-Licensing Linux Kernel with GPL V2 and GPL V3" Linus is
| quite pessimistic about Sun's commitment to open source: "So
| they want to use Linux resources (_especially_ drivers), but
| they do *not* want to give anything back especially ZFS, which
| seems to be one of their very very few bright spots).

Solaris Better Than Linux - That's Missing The Point!

,----[ Quote ]
| So - Open Solaris is POINTLESS! Linux is good enough, do something
| else if you want to be different. Otherwise take the good stuff in
| Solaris and add it into Linux to make it more stable and powerful. I
| should go further, Open Solaris is dangerous and should be shunned.
| It is distracting people from working on proper open source
| projects. If Sun were in the teeny-weenyist bit interesting in
| promoting open source - then they would do so through Linux. How
| about porting the Solaris scheduler to Linux - now that would
| be cool!

Is Solaris truly open source?

,----[ Quote ]
| ...if you dig into the idea of open source, there still is an
| ideological connotation to its definition, for better or worse.
| It's the idea of community development. Source that is freely
| available is valuable because it allows others to modify and
| improve that software. No one gets paid for their effort, but
| everyone enjoys the fruits of their collective labors. It's not
| that Linus Torvalds is promoting socialism with his Linux kernel,
| but he is not thinking about returns on investment either. He just
| wants a good operating system, just as the Apache developers just
| want rock-solid Web server software.
