FUD: Windows is "most secure OS"
,----[ Quote ]
| Andy Patrizio has an incredibly sloppy story entitled "Surprise,
| Microsoft Listed as Most Secure OS" at internetnews.com, which
| purports to summarize the recently released Symantec Internet
| Security Thread Report Volume XI. But if you look closely at
| the actual report (PDF), you'll see that this claim that Windows
| is "Most Secure" is based merely on Microsoft's relative speediness
| in patching security holes.

Microsoft issues Vista security scorecard, gives itself an A-plus

| But simply counting up vulnerabilities, patched or not, doesn't tell
| the whole story, argued Oliver Friedrichs, senior director of
| Symantec Corp.'s security response team.
|
| "The severity of [a] vulnerability plays into this, too," Friedrichs
| said today. "A single vulnerability that has a high severity could
| lead to the next Sasser or Blaster [worm], but an OS with a larger
| [bug] count, but with [ones rated] less high may be in a better
| defensive position overall."

| ...the trick that XP misses is that you must compel all ordinary
| users to have restricted, non-admin accounts. You make it impossible
| - or at least really hard - for normal accounts to have super-user

| or the protected ones of the OS itself, and they can't touch anything

|
| It's never going to happen now - it's too late for Vista, and after
| this, there will probably never be such a big change in Windows again,
| until it's replaced with something new.
|
| But here's a fun thought. What if Microsoft were held legally
| responsible for all those vulnerable, insecure Windows
| installations out there?
