Hmmm, I just burned an audio cd using mp11 and a data cd on my brand
spank'n new Vista Ultimate box and guess what? Both worked flawlessly
and fast. I did change the data cd to the mastered format (for
portability), not sure if that has anything to do with the issue or
not....
With that said, I have been using Vista Ultimate 32-bit Edition for
about 3 days - and I personally like it a lot. UAC is not nearly as
anoying as people would have you believe. Yes, it comes on when I try
to change account settings for the other people using this machine,
and when I install software - but that is about it.
I like the new interface - it is nice and smoth, even with full screen
video running as my wallpaper (though, I didn't leave that on for very
long - it tended to be a little disconcerting to have the background
moving around :). Much smother then my (admitedly limited) experience
with beryl. Though, I do plan to create a linux partition on this
hardware (just to compare).
New hardware:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
4GB RAM
320 GB SATA
nVidia 8600GTS (256 MB)
The only thing I have installed that didn't work was my copy of
"Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition". It's the only game I have
installed so far - I've been mostly setting up my development tools
(SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, VS2005 Team Suite, Source Safe, etc). In
fact, I want to point out that my HP LaserJet 2200 actually works
better under Vista then it did XP - and I didn't have to install
anything. I plugged it in and opened the print dialog - and there it
was. The double sided printing actually works - something that I
could never get to work on XP.
My camera still works just fine (Kodak EasyShare DX4900). I haven't
tried to hook up my old HP scanner yet though :)
All that said - I would not recommend it for a novice user just yet.
The security model has changed enough, that it takes a little getting
used to. And some things I had to go and locate drivers for - the
integrated sound on my mother board for instance, Vista wouldn't
install the xp version. My keyboards integrated fingerprint scanner -
I had to locate updated versions of the software for that as well.
Nothing that I didn't experience when XP was released, but enough that
I would not try to sell it to a normal home user. In fact, the local
merchant from whom I purchased this new hardware, tried to talk me out
of Vista at first... Until the found out I wasn't a novice use. I
found out that both of the sales guys/system builders there run Vista
Ultimate on their own personal machines, and really like it as well I
might add - they just want to wait for the OEM's to catch up before
they start selling it to customers.
Anyway, I'll probably start installing gentoo on here is a few days -
so I'll see how that goes :)
