H-P makes millions using Debian Linux, so there are plenty of reasons (and
sources) to pay money. But the question then becomes, "is it a wise idea?".
Consider this:
Debian Linux project group to pay developers
,----[ Quote ]
| A group of senior developers from the Debian GNU/Linux project have decided
| to raise funds to pay volunteers who work on the project in order that
| releases can be made more frequently.

Also remember what motivates many developers...
Do You Work Better If You're Working For Free?
,----[ Quote ]
| After we finish the next issue of Release 2.0, we'll be turning our
| attention to a series of open source reports, the first of which
| we'll be unveiling at OSCON. Another project I'm working on --
| one outside O'Reilly Radar that has nothing to do with technology
| -- makes me wonder about how different groups consider open source
| projects.

Then there's Canonical plan, which isn't unfair at all.
Dell helping Canonical become profitable
,----[ Quote ]
| If you compare the Dell prices to the official Canonical support prices,
| you will find that one year of support costs $250 direct from Canonical,
| and $275 if you buy it bundled with your Dell machine.

Ubuntu is not a charity.
