They have very deep pockets.

Nokia are huge in devices, indeed, the N800/N810 is a cracking example
of this.  Google, on the other hand, are looking to monetise their
offerings through advertising.  

Google would be well advised to adopt everything they can from Nokia's
experience with maemo.
