  The threat of a bit of intellectual property becoming a commodity is something
that already should have been present in the industry. The fact that they can get
away with selling you the same thing year after year is somewhat of a anamoly. It's
caused buy the network effects associated with "needing to be compatable".

  Remove that and the market starts to resemble something like normal again.

  Price and margins are supposed to decrease. The free movement of competitors
in and out of the market should make this effect even more pronounced. Software
vendors should have it rough like anyone else in business.

  If it were not free software then it would rightfully be other commercial
competitors.
