Evaluating Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Based on Trust

| ...for those occasions when the users must certify their complete control
| over the OS, in critical server applications and security research, Linux
| looks like the best solution to Mr. Winston.

All Your Product Are Belong to Us

| It's as if an alien mindset has taken over the American corporate culture.
| They seem to think they own us. The latest example, and perhaps the worst, is
| Apple's deliberate use of an update to cripple iPhones that
| had "unauthorized" software. But Apple is hardly the first company to act as
| if it can do whatever it wishes with its products after we buy them.

| The company's reluctance to acknowledge that users should have final say over
| what changes are made to the operating system means that people end up using
| Windows 98 or Win2000, installing a cracked version of XP, installing Linux
| and a VMWare Windows machine, switching to Linux entirely, or getting a Mac.
| I fail to see how any of this benefits Microsoft."

Windows Update update screws updating

| Earlier this year, Microsoft pushed out what is being termed a 'stealth

| what new patches, security fixes and the like to install and are prompted to
| install and reboot. However, this fix - which was to the Update system

Coincidence? WGA Failures Followed Windows Update 381
,----[ Quote ]
| One plausible scenario: Windows PCs running Windows Update version
| 7.0.6000.374 (or earlier) failed to activate/validate against a WGA service
| updated for version 7.0.6000.381. Microsoft had attributed the WGA failure to
| early release of a system update, which could fit this scenario. I haven't
| set up a new Vista PC recently. But if I rightly remember, activation is a
| process that occurs before updating.
