I think they just hammer on the stereotypes over and over again. It's
effective, but it won't last if people judge by personal experience.
In 7+ years of using Linux (even on multiple PCs) I never faces a situation
where I had to wipe & reinstall. Forced reboots happen just a few times a
year, so they can be assumped to be non existent (unless there's a power cut,
which is rare here).
Linux (KDE is my preference) is an excellent desktop and it's hard to
understand why people listen to the myths rather than take time to draw their
conclusions. I rarely ever use the CLI (unless I run scripts that automate
complicated things) and I barely ever open the file manager. No popups, no
obligatory software like AV hogware... it's great.
