Gaim has been renamed Pidgin and it should be intuitive to install if it is not
already there. It's a matter of ticking a checkbox and pressing "OK".

There should be no "detection" issues.

PS - have just checked on a Ubuntu 7.04 box... GAIM is installed by default,
but you can get it updated if you wish.
