Windows wants in on the $200 laptop
,----[ Quote ]
| In that article I was reminded of a small snippet of information which made
| me at first chuckle then think. This snippet was that Microsoft was testing
| the laptop to see if windows would run on it. My first thought was HA! Here
| is an example where Open Source technology is clearly a better solution than
| Proprietary. Then a second and darker thought crossed my mind. Why is
| Microsoft testing the laptop?
|
| It seems to me that as Microsoft is a business there can only be one reason.
| Money! They see a way of making a profit out of this laptop. They sure as
| heck won't give windows away for free so this will raise the price of the
| laptop again. Hence the $200 in the title. Sure Microsoft as a business has a
| right to be competitive but they have a tendency of going too far. In this
| case where a non-profit organization is trying to do some good in the world
| Microsoft has no business in trying to make a profit from it.

One laptop per child and open source

| For once Microsoft is getting the reverse Linux laptop experience:
| little support and little documentation for the hardware. The result
| will be a platform that doesn?t include any of the really novel
| features that we're building in, bad power management, no systems
| management via the firmware and apps that will randomly crash because
| they can't fix the virtual memory problem in the same way we're
| approaching it. A second class citizen, to be sure.

OLPC project clarifies: no plans for Windows support
,----[ Quote
| According to Walter Bender, president of Software and Content at OLPC,
| there is no agreement in place between OLPC and Microsoft to offer XO
| laptops with any version of Windows. Bender also indicated that
| Microsoft has not contacted OLPC regarding its $3 software bundling
| program, nor have any governments requested that the XO be outfitted
| with Windows. In short, there is no existing collaboration between
| Microsoft and OLPC aimed at outfitting the XO laptop with Windows.

OLPC: Free Software Still Rules
