According to one large poll, when Microsoft launched it's May attack on Linux,
it only drove many decision makers to Linux, who will choose even just for
spite. Since then, many OEMs have picked up Linux, hell has frozen over (AMD
went open source, just one among many), and Linux usage in
server/desktop/devices has grown significantly.
Microsoft graudlly loses and it knows it. So it tried to contaminate its rivals
using exclusionary deals that move the goalposts (Xen, Novell, Sun, and
other). Not much success so far. OOXML is not only rejected, but it also
exposes a company that resorts to crime (bribery). Vista is still a bomb
(stink bomb). Sales are worse than XP, despite growth in the number of
computers and 5-6 years or so-called development (they "rebooted" in 2005).
