[News] Review of Early Release of KDE 4 Remix, Plasma Scripting

Kubuntu Hardy Heron KDE 4 Remix review

,----[ Quote ]
| The Kubuntu KDE4 Live spin gives you the benefit of using the new KDE 4
| desktop environment in a relatively stable, tried-and-tested Ubuntu system.
| While it is a shame that KDE 4 couldn’t make it to the official Kubuntu
| release, that is planned for Intrepid Ibex, perhaps this does give KDE
| application developers a clear signal that v4 is coming, and will hit the
| major distros soon.
|
| In my time playing with this disc, I had no major problems at all. Aside from
| my minor annoyances with some elements of the theme, KDE 4 provides that new
| backend technology that application developers can use to build extremely
| rich applications, but also giving a new smooth visual refresh to convince
| users to upgrade.

Also from KDE:

... on scripting

,----[ Quote ]
| The solution? Well, I don't know if there is just one solution per say, but
| here's mine: we're going to have two different kinds of APIs. One for ninjas.
| One for myspacers. Plasma's design allows for that, even using the same
| programming language for both since we differentiate based on target API not
| implementation language. As a neat side effect, it turns out that the
| myspacer style API is also a hell of a lot easier to secure.
|
| So there you have it: my very long winded explanation for why there will be
| multiple scripting APIs in plasma. It all starts with the question of who our
| audience is and the moves on to how to stand a chance of capturing them.

KDE 4 rev 802150: Work in progress

| KWin with Wobbly Windows
|
| Kwin features a new visual effect known to most of you from Compiz: the
| Wobbly Windows. Only a few days ago the settings panel for this effect had
| tons of detailed options. Most of these options have been disabled now, the
| only thing that can be configured is the window deformation level while in
| motion. This seems more appropriate for a common user since the number of
| configurable settings was overwhelming before. One minor flaw that I noticed
| in KWin Wobble Windows is that the window shadow is not properly deformed (it
| does not adjust to the current shape of the window).
