[News] New Tools Make GNU/Linux Benchmarks Much Simpler

Intel's LessWatts offers energy-saving forum for Linux shops

,----[ Quote ]
| Michael Larabel, the founder of Phoronix, a Web site that reports on the
| testing Linux of hardware, said the most helpful tool on LessWatts is
| PowerTop. "PowerTop is easy to use and can noticeably extend your notebook's
| battery life," said Larabel, a Linux software developer. "It does a good job
| [of] eliminating the processes most users can do without." Its only
| shortcoming is that it doesn't explain the commands or their impact, he said.
| Nevertheless, PowerTop is a must-have for any mobile Linux user, he added.

Benchmarking Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Knowing how to measure your own computer performance gives you mighty system
| and network tuning powers. It's also fun to run various benchmarks on
| commercial products because most of them forbid publishing any kind of
| benchmark results--but they can't stop you from talking to friends.

How we tested password security products

,----[ Quote ]
| Each product was tested on a gigabit Ethernet switched network containing
| servers running Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition, FreeBSD 5.0, Red Hat
| Enterprise Linux 5 and Novell SUSE Enterprise Server 10 (all patched to
| current revisions). Two products, e-DMZ PAR and Symark PowerKeeper, were
| supplied on appliances, and we installed Quest Privilege Manager for Unix on
| VMware ESX Server on a Dell 1950 server and Cyber-Ark on VMware ESX Server on
| an HP585G2 server. The VMware ESX servers were also used to house target
| servers under the control of the products.

Fat, fatter, fattest: Microsoft’s kings of bloat

| Our tests show that Windows Vista and Office 2007 not only smash Redmond’s

Putting Windows On A Diet ... To Compete With Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| How scared is Microsoft of Linux?  There's a hint or two of its fear in the
| fact that MS is preparing a special slim-and-trim version of Windows XP,
| within the next month or two, to run specifically on Asus's Eee PC.  You'd
| think maybe it could have done this slimming-down sooner -- something that
| Linux already does without breaking a sweat.
