Is it lift off for Linux?
,----[ Quote ]
| [Shuttleworth:] We are seeing a lot of innovation in the consumer electronics
| area - all driven by Linux.
|
| Motorola, for example, has said that 60% of their phones will be running on
| Linux within three years. I expect that figure to not stop at 60%. It will
| power on right past that.
|
| The majority of the new small phone manufacturers are a real hotbed of
| innovation in China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan and are using Linux as a
| platform.
|
| It suggests that Linux enables anyone to innovate. One of the harshest
| criticisms I ever saw coming from the proprietorial software world of Linux
| was that it only copied the ideas that had already been proved in the
| commercial software world.
|
| This is quite deeply offensive to anyone who has been close to the open
| source. If you look at all the innovation in internet itself, which is
| largely powered by free software, and then if you look at the innovation
| placed on top of that - everything from YouTube to Facebook, eBay, Amazon,
| Google - these extraordinarily innovative technology companies are really
| powered by free software.

And he's right. Microsoft tries to distract people from this and only ever talk
about 'market share' when it come to the desktop. It's a FUD technique.

| "The year of the Linux desktop isn't going to happen," peragrin added. "The
| year of the Linux mobile, the Linux server and the Linux hand-held computer,
| however, are fast approaching. Linux will take the desktop market through the
| back door. By getting in on every other device first."

Lots of money goes into Linux development as long as it's huge in many areas.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

| If I ask you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.

Linux Market to Triple by 2012
,----[ Quote ]
| Analyst firm Research and Markets has just put out a project on Linux-based
| server and client hardware sales, and is projecting that the market will more
| than triple between 2007 and 2012.
|
| A market for a platform is not the same as an ecosystem for it, which is much
| larger in that it includes the cost of people and third-party software and
| services for the code that runs atop the platform. So the R&M Linux market
| numbers might seem a little small. In any event, the consultancy pegged the
| Linux product and services market for Linux running on servers and clients
| (but not embedded systems) at $2.4 billion in 2007.

2010: Russia's open software market to grow 4-fold
,----[ Quote ]
| Analysts note that Linux vendors are traditionally present on the mobile
| device market. According to forecasts the OS might become the leader in
| the segment accounting for 40% of it by 2010. ?Currently the share of
| mobile devices with Linux OS is not big in Russia as compared to other
| countries, such as China, for instance. However, the producer's policy,
| Nokia in particular testifies to the fact the situation is changing
| for the better", Ms. Karaeva concluded.
