Microsoft menaced by open source
,----[ Quote ]
| "A number of commercial firms compete with us using an open source business
| model by modifying and then distributing open source software to end users at
| nominal cost and earning revenue on complementary services and products," the
| Volish statement proclaimed.
|
| [...]
|
| And the Vole did further bleat: "To the extent open source software gains
| increasing market acceptance, our sales, revenue and operating margins may
| decline."

Poor Microsoft. Having to compete on price for a change? Here's how Microsoft
wants to view it (Redmond tabloid/tosh):
Open Source: A 'Growing Challenge' to Microsoft
,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft lately has made some peace offerings to the open source world and
| even joined the open source Apache Software Foundation, yet the report
| depicts open source as top financial risk factor.

Microsoft's Word To Investors About Open Source
,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft's annual 10-K filing with the SEC has a few lines in it about open
| source as a competitor that has raised more than a few eyebrows. I'm scarcely
| surprised, especially since it highlights Microsoft's schizoid behavior over
| open source.

'Embracing' its #1 rival? Not likely.
Microsoft warns of open source threat
,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft has warned of a growing threat to its business model from open
| source software.
|
| In its annual report the company said that it was facing increasing pressure
| from open source vendors, who Microsoft claims are stealing its ideas and
| benefiting from its intellectual property.

There is no "intellectual property".
There are copyrights and trademarks. FOSS doesn't touch or infringe on those
(but Microsoft funneled money to SCO to make slanderous claims as such).
Where Linux implements Windows functionality (e.g. Samba), it's because
Microsoft spreads lock-in and deliberately ignores industry standards. It's
like throwing a rock at someone and then 'accusing' that someone of ducking.

Microsoft's annual report: A study in open-source awareness...and ignorance
,----[ Quote ]
| In reading through Microsoft's annual report, I am struck by how far the
| company has come in appreciating the threat that open source brings to
| Redmond.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft
,----[ Quote ]
| If I ask you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.
