ASUS Eee Box PC

| The Eee Box comes with a quick-boot environment called Express Gate, which
| ASUSTek has previously used on motherboards for Intel CPUs. Express Gate lets
| you get online in a few seconds (5 to 7 seconds by my count) and surf with a
| version of the Firefox Web browser. It also has Skype, a chat client, and a
| photo viewer. It's a nice environment if all you want to do is check webmail,
| make a VoIP call, or surf for a while. Express Gate is Linux-based, so it
| doesn't have the drawbacks of running a Windows OS on a low-power PC. You
| also won't suffer the slowdowns I experienced when I used the Eee Box with
| Windows XP: I saw screens and windows slowly being redrawn, something that
| used to be common with XP boxes but that I haven't seen in a while. 1GB may
| be "enough" to run Windows, but the system's poky processor and integrated
| graphics combine to slow everything down. The Eee Box is usable in Windows,
| but the Linux-based Express Gate interface is snappier.

Microsoft's Partner Group Attacks Low-cost PCs:

Cheaper laptops on the way

| Even so, Taiwan's Market Intelligence Centre (MIC) is predicting that 8.02
| million low-price mini notebook PCs will be shipped this year. The
| publicly-funded research house adds that this should balloon 128%, to 18.3
| million units, next year.
|
| Priorities
|
| Gartner, meanwhile, warns that while it is important that prices continue to
| come down, companies that become too focused on breaking that barrier could
| be distracted from addressing other issues surrounding mini-notebooks.
|
| “The economic benefits of IT literacy in emerging markets are currently
| driving the push for the $100 PC, but there are many open questions that
| remain,” says Gartner research director Annette Jump.

Microsoft says:

"Linux [...] gained some acceptance as competitive pressures lead PC OEMs to
reduce costs and new, lower price PC form factors gain adoption. [...] Nearly
all computer manufacturers offer server hardware for the Linux operating
system and many contribute to Linux operating system development."

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

| If I ask you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.
