[News] Free Software Wins When Copy Protection Enforced

When software protection is good for FOSS

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently there have been numerous discussions on software and media piracy,
| with a few people even saying that open source could be the solution to
| stopping software piracy. In many ways I wish it could be the single
| solution that brings software piracy to a grinding halt - not because it's
| better to be honest and pay for all your proprietary software (which it is,
| so don't pirate software), or videos, or songs - but because I want to see
| open source succeed. However, software piracy is one of open source's
| biggest enemies, and few people realize that.
|
| [...]
|
| Those are my three suggestions that will be the motivating force that
| benefits and strengthens FOSS. And of the three, education is the most
| important, because if people don't know about FOSS solutions that are equal
| to or better than their proprietary counterparts, when decision day comes
| they can't move to something they don't know about. Even if they want to make
| that jump, if they don't know what's out there, and what it can do for them,
| they either won't move, or will simply migrate to yet another proprietary
| solution.

Piracy and Malware - Pfft!

,----[ Quote ]
| A frequent meme in piracy trash talking is that piracy is linked to malware
| (example). If your child is downloading pirated material (so the argument
| goes) they will be downloading it from a malware infected site and infecting
| their own computer resulting in poor performance, data loss and ID theft.  A
| variant of this argument is that the downloads expose the kids to evil
| pornographers.  Therefore piracy is bad and the government should pass laws
| to stop it.
|
| [...]
|
| We can concede that malware infecting children’s computers is not only a
| serious problem, but also a problem on which the government ought to take
| action. However, further subsidising the closed source software industry is
| not the solution - these subsidies are the problem. If government wishes to
| protect children from these evils it would use only open data formats for
| data storage and interchange and strongly promote the widespread adoption of
| open source software.
