Why the Computer Won’t Be Going Into the Cloud Anytime Soon
,----[ Quote ]
| Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about cloud computing. The CherryPal
| Linux-based machine got on both Slashdot and Digg when it announced it was
| shipping a machine with “Firefox as the OS”. The BBC ran an article that
| claimed that Microsoft was ending the Windows era with a new operating
| system, Midori, which would store almost all your information in the cloud,
| getting rid of you being tied to one machine. And the Red Hat CEO thinks that
| cloud computing is the way of the future. Unfortunately, they’re all wrong.
| For now, the computer is staying right where it is.

Dogs hide bones, Firefox hides useful tricks
,----[ Quote ]
| No, let me try that again. Firefox is one of those applications that's so
| hard to write about, because there may be little tricks and shortcuts I've
| been using for some time, and someone will discover one and say, "Hey, that
| rocks! Why didn't anyone tell me?" Then light dawns over my marblehead that
| it is a useful trick, and I should have pointed it out.

Canonical: Linux Mainframes May Power Software as a Service
,----[ Quote ]
| If you’re a managed service provider or software as a service (SaaS)
| specialist, here’s an interesting theory: Instead of purchasing dozens — or
| hundreds — of x86 servers, you’re sometimes better off virtualizing your
| applications on a mainframe.
|
| At least that’s the theory from Canonical Vice President Malcolm Yates, one
| of the leading evangelists of Ubuntu Linux. Here’s why Yates believes
| mainframes will play a growing role in the SaaS revolution.

Bringing down software margins with the cloud and open source
,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft expects to lose margin as "cloud" competitors start to eat away at
| its core businesses. Kudos to Microsoft for calling out the obvious.
|
| [...]
|
| Put more bluntly, there's not a chance in Hades that Microsoft will be able
| to charge more for its cloud-based offerings, not when its competitors are
| using the cloud to pummel its desktop and server-based offerings. This is
| something that Microsoft (and everyone else) is simply going to have to get
| used to: The go-go days of outrageous (software) margins are over. Done.
