"Microsoft's operating system typically costs around £50 per unit,"
said David Drummond, UK managing director at Acer. "On a £1,000 PC
that is peanuts, but on a £200 computer it is a major issue."

This is Microsoft's bigger problem. With Desktop PCs dropping to $300
each and Laptops dropping as low as $500, the "premium" of a $50 in
license costs for Vista, $100 extra for RAM, and all of the
restrictions on marketing and promotion, the typical Microsoft OEM
License is losing it's attractiveness.

Meanwhile, the smaller footprint means lower costs per machine. At
the same time, the flexibility of Linux gives the OEM much more
flexibility to create really exciting interfaces and capabilities
using combinations of OSS and Proprietary products.
