Lock-In, the 2008 Flavor

,----[ Quote ]
| So, if I want to watch the Olympics online, I need to install Microsoft
| Silverlight. And if I’m interested in good-looking new high-end compact
| cameras, I’m super-interested in the new Nikon P6000; which writes a RAW
| format that can only be read by Microsoft WIC, available only on Windows.
|
| Open, non-proprietary equivalents to all of these, which do not constrain
| your customers’ choice of platform, are widely available.
|
| Nikon is a competent camera company. The IOC is a competent sports
| impresario. The Chinese government is a competent authoritarian dictatorship.
| Pity they’re all so fucking stupid about technology.

Tim Bray provides a bridge between Sun and developers

,----[ Quote ]
| Looking further ahead, Bray predicts a move away from Microsoft operating
| systems. "The fact is that the vast majority of office desktops are using
| Windows, the third-best platform," he says. "You can argue about the relative
| merits of modern Linuxes like Ubuntu and the Mac, but they are clearly better
| than Windows in terms of robustness, cost, performance, and a whole bunch of
| other things. For the long term, can the mainstream of business continue to
| ignore the fact that there's a better alternative than what they're running?
| If that logjam breaks, that's going to be a real change."

Olympics Online, With a Hook

,----[ Quote ]
| But for many industry executives who compete with Microsoft, the world’s
| largest software company, the Silverlight strategy recalls a federal
| antitrust case in which Microsoft was found guilty of using its market muscle
| to stifle competition from the Web.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| A couple of years ago you reiterated that IBM was Microsoft's biggest
| competitor and you said not just on the business side, but overall. If I ask
| you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.

Using the European championship to spread malware

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft is pushing their evil SilverLight platform very hard. They want to
| make sure that providers of cross-platform software for delivering rich
| applications via the web browser are thwarted. This is normal behavior for a
| monopolistic company and certainly for Microsoft. To accomplish this goal
| they are throwing around bucketloads of money and FUD to get content
| providers to use the Microsoft malware Silverlight exclusively.

Shining Some Light on Microsoft's Moonlight Covenant

,----[ Quote ]
| My conclusion now, after having reviewed it, is the same as I predicted. This
| is worthless and potentially harmful vapor-speak.

Mono, The Road To Hell: Final Proof

,----[ Quote ]
| This is a Microsoft-branded piece of shit.
|
| Now, if there are still Linux users still loving Mono, and still believing
| they have anything in common with FREEDOM & Open Source, they're idiots like
| hell.
|
| Proofs of MALA FIDE from Microsoft's part:
|
|  1. NOBODY interested in a good-faith patent protection would restrict the
|  protection to the downstream recipients of a UNIQUE source — but this is
|  what Microsoft is doing!
|
|  2. NOBODY interested in a good-faith patent protection would restrict the
|  protection to the UNMODIFIED AND USED "AS INTENDED" ("for the intended
|  purpose") for an OPEN-SOURCE project — but this is what Microsoft is doing!
|
|  3. NOBODY interested in a good-faith patent protection would restrict the
|  protection in any ways. Simply imposing restrictions means WHATEVER FALLS
|  OUTSIDE THE SPECIFIC CONDITIONS IS SUBJECT TO FEAR, UNCERTAINTY AND DOUBT!
|
| Yes, this is Microsoft. Yes, this covenant is ONLY and ONLY for the benefit
| of Novell's SLED and SLES, and for the benefit of openSUSE. This is for
| people to ONLY consider openSUSE as a "safe" Linux way to use Moonlight and
| Mono, and therefore to increase the penetration of SLED/SLES as "the" Linux
| for the Enterprise.
|
| This is the abjection of the Microsoft-Novell fascist conspiracy.
|
| Have a nice day.

ECIS Accuses Microsoft of Plotting HTML Hijack

,----[ Quote ]
| An industry coalition that has represented competitors of Microsoft
| in European markets before the European Commission stepped up its
| public relations offensive this morning, this time accusing
| Microsoft of scheming to upset HTML's place in the fabric of
| the Internet with XAML, an XML-based layout lexicon for
| network applications.

|
| One thing we have got to change is our strategy -- allowing Office
| documents to be rendered very well by OTHER PEOPLES BROWSERS is one of the
| most destructive things we could do to the company.
|
| We have to stop putting any effort into this and make sure that Office
| documents very well depends on PROPRIETARY IE capabilities.
|
| Anything else is suicide for our platform. This is a case where Office has
| to  to destroy Windows.

Silverlight is about The Microsoft Web.

,----[ Quote ]
| Sorry, but I have to say something very rude. You clearly don't know
| what you're talking about. That is Microsoft PR talking. Can you say
| "credibility loss".
|
| Silverlight is about The Microsoft Web
|
| Silverlight is not about the World Wide Web. It's about The Microsoft
| Web. It's about getting fools to rally around Microsoft. After all of
| this time and experience with Microsoft, anybody with half a brain
| will be smart enough to avoid doing that. The last thing you want to
| be is dependent on Microsoft and set yourself up to be a DIRECT
| competitor with "Microsoft Cloud Services" down the road. Dumb.
| Foolish. Stupid. Smart investors won't invest one dime in your
| company and might even short your stock.
|
| Remember, it's Microsoft's cloud. Microsoft is not investing in
| huge datacenters all around the world for no reason. And, Microsoft
| will do whatever it takes, including operating that new online
| services business at a huge loss, to starve off any smaller
| competitor that foolishly chose to develop on the Silverlight
| platform. Microsoft sold $44 BILLION and cleared $18 BILLION
| profit last year. How many billions did you make last year?

Opera files EU antitrust suit against Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| Opera Software has filed an antitrust suit against Microsoft in the European
| Union, accusing it of stifling competition by tying its Internet Explorer web
| browser to Windows.
|
| The complaint, which was filed by the Norwegian firm with the European
| Commission yesterday, says Microsoft is abusing its dominant position in the
| desktop PC market by offering only Internet Explorer as a standard part of
| Windows, and hindering interoperability by not following accepted standards
| with IE.
|
| Opera is asking the Commission, the executive branch of the European Union,
| to force Microsoft to unbundle IE from Windows, or include other browsers as
| a standard part of its operating system. It also wants it to require
| Microsoft to adhere to industry standards with its Web browser.

Gates deposition videos

,----[ Quote ]
| Boies: Do you remember that in January, 1996, a lot of OEMs were
| bundling non-Microsoft browsers?
|
| Gates: I'm not sure.
|
| Boies: What were the non-Microsoft browsers that you were
| concerned about in January of 1996?
|
| Gates: What's the question? You're trying to get me to recall
| what other browsers I was thinking about when I wrote that sentence?
|
| Boies: No, because you've told me that you don't know what you
| were thinking about when you wrote that sentence.
|
| Gates: Right.
|
| Boies: What I'm trying to do is get you to tell me what
| non-Microsoft browsers you were concerned about in January of
| 1996. If it had been only one, I probably would have used the
| name of it. Instead I seem to be using the term non-Microsoft
| browsers. My question is what non-Microsoft browsers were you
| concerned about in January of 1996?
|
| Gates: I'm sure -- what's the question? Is it -- are you asking
| me about when I wrote this e-mail or what are you asking me about?
|
| Boies: I'm asking you about January of 1996.
|
| Gates: That month?
|
| Boies: Yes, sir.
|
| Gates: And what about it?
|
| Boies: What non-Microsoft browsers were you concerned about in
| January of 1996?
|
| Gates: I don't know what you mean "concerned."
|
| Boies: What is it about the word "concerned" that you don't
| understand?
|
| Gates: I'm not sure what you mean by it.
