First Look: The gOS 3 Operating System

,----[ Quote ]
| The gOS operating system is an open source Ubuntu derivative published by
| Emeryville, Calif.-based Good OS LLC. gOS gained fame when it showed up in a
| line of inexpensive computers sold at Wal-Mart. As a longtime Ubuntu user,
| I've known and used some of its derivatives, such as Kubuntu. However, this
| time, I decided to give gOS a spin.
|
| The version of gOS I used, gOS 3 Gadgets, is built with components from
| Ubuntu 8.04's ("Hardy Heron") repositories. Despite the gOS name and
| integration with Google online apps, the company that makes gOS has no
| affiliation with Google.
|
| [...]
|
| All in all, gOS is a good distro built on Ubuntu's foundation, with room for
| improvement. If you like green color schemes and frequently use Google's
| services, give it a try.

,----[ Quote ]
| Overall comparing with gOS 2.0 , there has been number of important changes
| in gOS 3.0.gOS 3.0 is has become extremely user friendly and feature rich,
| and is probably one of the simplest distribution available for Linux Newbies
| to get themselves acquainted with.

A video tour of gOS Gadgets 3 (beta)

,----[ Quote ]
| gOS is an interesting Ubuntu GNU/Linux offshoot. We've reviewed it and
| interviewed gOS founder Daniel Liu. Now, in this video, you can see the
| distro in action before you decide whether it is something you want to
| download and play with for yourself. Remember that this video was made with a
| beta version of gOS Gadgets 3, so some features don't work correctly that
| will almost certainly be just fine in the final version. That caveat given,
| here's the video.

gOS 3 Gadgets (beta) targets Linux beginners and Google Gadgets lovers

,----[ Quote ]
| If you're looking for a beginner-level GNU/Linux distribution, or one that is
| heavily focused on Internet services, gOS 3.0 is for you. Otherwise, this
| distro won't do much to steal you away from your current one, especially
| since this is mostly a rebranded and rethemed Ubuntu 8.04 with Google Gadgets
| and services thrown in. Still, as a simplistic Web desktop with Google
| Gadgets installed by default, gOS 3.0 may be worth a look.

gOS: The Ubuntu giant killer?

,----[ Quote ]
| There’s a lot to like in this release of gOS, but Ubuntu fans have nothing to
| be worried about. This ain’t gonna topple the world’s favorite Linux anytime
| soon. Indeed, it’s not in gOS’ interest to do that. And I don’t really think
| that’s the intention anyway. The gOS guys seem to have OEM partnerships in
| mind. This is pretty smart, but it’s just one small component of Ubuntu’s
| plans for world domination.
|
| I really liked the Google/web 2.0 integration of gOS, and it works
| surprisingly well. I must confess that I had expected to hate it. But I
| wonder why there isn’t an existing Ubuntu-sponsored project to meet the same
| ends. This is such an obvious avenue to travel down that it’s surprising only
| gOS is doing so.

[A Look at gOS]

,----[ Quote ]
| In early November of 2007, the gOS Linux Operating System was presented along
| with the Everex gPC available at Wal-Mart and on-line. The gPC desktop system
| was priced at 9 and its early succes must be attributed to the gOS 1.0
| Operating system based on Ubuntu 7.10 + enlightenment. The original gOS 1.0
| OS offered many enhancements over it's Ubuntu base, the most noticeable being
| links to interact with Web 2.0 applications by Google and other vendors.
| These applications included Facebook, Blogger, Google searches, Wikipedia,
| Youtube and more.

Impressions: gOS 3 Gadgets BETA

,----[ Quote ]
| Overall gOS is great. It does try a little too much to be like a mac, with
| the dock on the bottom, the one bar on top, and moving the window buttons
| from the top right to the top left. None of these things are standard in
| Ubuntu, but they aren’t enough to keep me from thinking that the new gOS is a
| keeper.

Gadgets, WINE, and LXDE at LinuxWorld Expo

,----[ Quote ]
| gOS, the Linux OS known for its debut in the $199 Wal-Mart gPC and NetBooks,
| today announced the details of the newest version of its Linux operating
| system for consumers, called gOS 3 Gadgets.

gOS Space: OSX-like operating system without the Apple

,----[ Quote ]
| I have to admit I went into this thinking it was going to take a lot to win
| me over. I am a devout Enlightenment fan and it would take absolute
| brilliance to pull me, kicking and screaming, from E17. gOS Space nearly does
| this. Nearly. While gOS is amazingly stable (for such an effects-centric
| operating system), it will not be able to update to the latest version of
| Ubuntu. Space is based on 7.10 and has the distribution upgrade disabled.
| Instead, the next revision of Space will be based on 8.04.

gOS and Sylvania's g netbook series

,----[ Quote ]
| Today we’re announcing on our blog that we’ve launched a new 7” netbook with
| Sylvania, one of the most trusted consumer brands in the world…
|
| Called the Sylvania g netbook, it is the first of a future series of Sylvania
| netbooks to come and feature gOS inside.

Review : gOS 2.0 Beta

,----[ Quote ]
| Conclusion : gOS is an extremely usable and user friendly Linux distribution.
| It actually brings much needed breath of fresh air to stagnant desktop Linux
| market (Dominated by Ubuntu and other distribution which are pretty similar
| with nothing radically different) . The future of operating system is
| certainly taking things online making operating system more of an interface
| to the applications available online and gOS takes a small step forward in
| this direction by integrating all kind of online applications into the gOS
| desktop and making the interface extremely user friendly. Also selling
| computers preloaded with gOS in Wallmart is another step in right direction .
| Overall gOS is highly impressive Desktop Linux distribution and one
| distribution to look forward to making in future.

A conversation with gOS founder David Liu (video)

,----[ Quote ]
| Why did David and his group decide the world needed yet another GNU/Linux
| distribution? And how are they making money? This second question is
| important because David says, yes, gOS (pronounced gee-oh-ess) is
| profitable -- and not from selling service and support contracts, either. For
| the full scoop, watch the video.

gOS 3 Beta, Netbooks, and Linux: An Interview with David Liu, Founder of Good
OS

,----[ Quote ]
| With the recent release of gOS 3 Beta, we thought it was prime time to take a
| closer look at the company responsible for creating the OS that powered the
| ill-fated Everex Cloudbook, and the gorgeous (and Mac OS X Leopard-inspired)
| gOS Space. We chewed the fat with David Liu, gOS founder and CEO, about the
| operating systems’ new features, potential competition from Ubuntu Netbook
| Remix, the push for consumer adoption, and the future of Linux on the
| desktop.
