Odd. I've never had trouble with the Gnome Network Manager (once I
figured out the configs), either with an Atheros-based card (the cheapo
"Ativa" wireless card they sell at Orifice Depot) or the Intel iwlwifi
driver.
However, you do have to make sure you /don't/ define any lines for wlan0
in your /etc/network/interfaces file.
Make sure you've installed wpasupplicant and ifupdown, too.
I've heard of others having problems, too, and being recommended to use
wicd or wifiradar. But nm-applet works fine on my machine.
