How OOXML vote could change all -- and nothing
,----[ Quote ]
| Whether the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) should adopt
| OOXML is a question that has fuelled a blog battle between supporters and
| opponents, ahead of this week's meeting in Geneva to finalize the text that
| will be put to the vote.
|
| But will the final decision even matter?
|
| Definitely not, according to Andy Updegrove, a Boston lawyer who works with
| industry standards bodies.

|
| Whatever the outcome of the vote, that secrecy is one of the things that
| should change in the way IT standards are developed, Sutor said.
|
| "Minutes should be published. This secrecy ... has to end," he said.

Standards Body Weighs Microsoft’s Competing Format For Document Sharing
,----[ Quote ]
| Reactions to the BRM have been mixed. Jonathan Zuck of the Association for
| Competitive Technology, which counts Microsoft as a member and issued a
| statement in support of the standard, said that OOXML is just as deserving as
| ODF of standardisation, as “only OOXML offers full fidelity for storage of
| existing documents” from prior versions of word-processing software.

Proprietary past looms over Microsoft OOXML hopes

| "There's a lot of collaboration going on between the various national bodies
| attending the meeting at the moment, so we can expect to hear an announcement
| on the outcome of the meeting from its convener by the weekend," said Sarah
| Bond, platform strategy manager for Microsoft.

Secret meeting, bought by Microsoft. Luckily, the EU will have them punished,
so more trouble lies ahead.
More importantly, as a question to be asked, why was there no public access to
a process involving a decision that affects us all? We should take pride in
the process, should we not?

A renewed wish for open document standards
,----[ Quote ]
| Currently, the technology industry is evaluating a proposed ISO standard for
| document formats. Given the importance of a workable standard, Microsoft's
| submission of Office Open XML (OOXML ) as an additional international
| standard has caught the attention of many. In September 2007, the original
| request to ISO was defeated. After further technical analysis of the
| specification along with all the additional data available on OOXML, Google
| believes OOXML would be an insufficient and unnecessary standard, designed
| purely around the needs of Microsoft Office.

Microsoft’s secretive standards orgs in Former Yugoslavia

| Croatian laws keep its national body’s votes secret, so the only way for the

Microsoft Tech Ed 2007: OpenXML

| He was asked "Why did Microsoft push OOXML through the "Fast Track" process
| instead of the standard ISO process? Wouldn't they get less resistance than
| faced now?"
|
| His response was very frank: "Office is a USD$10 billion revenue generator
| for the company. When ODF was made an ISO standard, Microsoft had to react
| quickly as certain governments have procurement policies which prefer ISO
| standards. Ecma and OASIS are 'international standards', but ISO is the
| international 'Gold Standard'. Microsoft therefore had to rush this standard
| through. Its a simple matter of commercial interests!"
