FOSS at HIMSS, Dr. Janice Honeyman-Buck
,----[ Quote ]
| To start her talk, she gave an overview of what Open Source is. Of course for
| me it is old hat, but she did a good job of informing her large and diverse
| audience about the basics of Open Source. She covered the basics, MySQL,
| Apache, Linux, Firefox. But then she talked about OpenEMR. ( Given the link
| she used, I do not think she is aware of the trademark rift in that
| community).

Hospital software vendor McKesson uses Linux to heal IT budgets
,----[ Quote ]
| At first, convincing hospital executives to go with McKesson's Linux-based
| applications was difficult because of fears that Linux wouldn't be as
| reliable as Unix, which had been in their IT shops for years, Simpson
| said. "It took some time for them to understand that open source is safe,
| that open source has support," he added.
|
| The deal with Red Hat "really kicked the program into gear," he said,
| allowing McKesson to offer its software with Red Hat Enterprise Linux in a
| top-to-bottom package for mission-critical hospital IT systems.

Editor's Corner (on Open Source in Healthcare)

Next Gen, Mission-Critical Apps To Be Deployed on Linux Says Report
,----[ Quote ]
| By now it should be obvious to even the most casual industry observers
| that Linux operating systems - and open source-based software in general -
| have reached critical marketplace mass. Recent Linux deals and
| announcements by Oracle and Microsoft have only reinforced the "open
| source is enterprise-grade" message that IBM, Unisys and other "Master
| Brand" hardware, software and services vendors have been preaching for
| years. In short, open source, especially Linux, is becoming "legitimized"
| by the major vendors for enterprise environments, and user executives
| are more than happy to believe them.

Open Source Needs Health Care Coverage
,----[ Quote ]
| First, let’s look at the big picture. A quick check of the news wires this
| morning revealed major healthcare-related statements from:
|
| * Avnet (the big distributor is promoting its healthcare ISVs)
| * Cisco (mobile healthcare)
| * Dell (partnering on patient care systems)
| * IBM (Virtual healthcare on Second Life)
| * Lawson Software (more than 100 healthcare providers are using its
| mobile applications)
| * Nortel and Polycom (TelePresence for hospitals)
| * Xerox (document management for healthcare)
|
| Of course, not all of the releases are compelling. Plenty of companies throw
| useless information out on the news wires in lame attempts to generate noise.
