Windows Server 2008 catching up with Linux
,----[ Quote ]
| Windows Server 2008 will never be Linux. And it's not likely to woo Linux
| users away from open source anytime soon.

| "There's an anti-Microsoft bias in Unixland," Gillen said. "The more
| Microsoft continues to erase objections [with features like PowerShell and
| Server Core], the harder it is to make the argument that Windows doesn't meet
| their needs."

"Consultants: These guys are your best bets as moderators. Get a well-known
consultant on your side early, but don’t let him publish anything blatantly
pro-Microsoft. Then, get him to propose himself to the conference organizers
as a moderator, whenever a panel opportunity comes up. Since he’s well-known,
but apparently independent, he’ll be accepted - one less thing for the
constantly-overworked conference organizer to worry about, right?"

Why are they reaching out for comments from Microsoft friends (pay-to-say
analysts)? Al Gillen is a known anti-Linux person (examples exist) and watch
this: '"There's an anti-Microsoft bias in Unixland," Gillen said.' There are
more examples.
It's a known fact that he has Microsoft as his customer and IDC is funded by
Bill Gates.
For the record, WS08 is the same as Vista (technically) and it already has
missing pieces and suffers issues (according to Microsoft sites). That's why
there's no marketing, either (you'll find few article/adverts about it).
Microsoft saves the money on marketing c**ppy products. It did this in vain
with Vista before retracting it (again, according to Microsoft watchers).

Has IDC got the wrong number for iPhone?
,----[ Quote ]
| IDC has poured cold water on Apple's iPhone just days after a previous survey
| led M:Metrics to talk up the new entry to the cellphone stakes. But are the

|
| [...]
|
| The most obvious difference is in the sample size. M:Metrics had
| 11,060 respondents, IDC just 456. The sample space was also different,
| with M:Metrics apparently sampling from mobile phone subscribers, while
| IDC looked at online mobile phone shoppers.

Microsoft Press Releases: Read Between the Lines
,----[ Quote ]
| We have a game we play around the office here with Microsoft press
| releases. The game is called Find the words that make the headline
| true. It's not always easy.
|
| [...]
|
| Our point: Microsoft has a long history of using press releases top
| romote their product momentum in shall we say interesting ways,
| using words like "fastest growing" (meaning, the number we started
| with was really really small) to redefining words such as "sold."
| It's not good marketing practice. Why? Because once consumers and
| press people figure out you are playing lawyer, they stop believing
| you and your brand. And that's more likely to do you harm than good.
