Sun limits MySQL Enterprise Unlimited

,----[ Quote ]
| A little less loudly the company has also confirmed that it has tinkered with
| the terms of MySQL Enterprise Unlimited, the site-wide agreement introduced
| in January last year that provided unlimited use of MySQL Enterprise for
| $40,000, the same price Oracle charges per CPU for Oracle Database Enterprise
| Edition.
|
| MySQL Enterprise Unlimited is proof of the open source model’s ability to
| disrupt a market but also effectively places a cap on the revenue MySQL - and
| now Sun - can earn per customer. Or at least it used to. As the small print
| on Sun’s MySQL product page indicates, while Enterprise Unlimited still
| allows for adoption on any number of servers, the offer is now only available
| to companies with 400 employees or less.

A bright future for MySQL

,----[ Quote ]
| MySQL is an example of a disruptive technology. At first, it was too puny for
| the proprietary databases to notice, and satisfied only small users. But its
| powers grew, and the size of the companies using it also increased. It cannot
| match the upper limits of DB2 capability at this point, but it will be
| interesting to see if and when that day comes. But it doesn’t have to; it is
| already transforming most of the database market. May Sun invest the money
| (and employ the open source software developers) to take it to the top.

Five Questions Facing Sun Micro's MySQL Acquisition

,----[ Quote ]
| Ever work for a small company that was acquired by a big, legacy technology
| company? Ever work in a nimble organization where decisions were made in an
| instant -- rather than debated in a committee? As a fast-moving Web 2.0
| pioneer, MySQL will need to adjust to Sun's more mature culture. On the flip
| side, Sun will need to maintain the best of MySQL's fast-moving, creative,
| open culture.

Sun Microsystems Announces Agreement to Acquire MySQL

,----[ Quote ]
| Sun Microsystems, Inc. has said that it has entered into a definitive
| agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of
| the world’s fastest growing open source databases for approximately $1
| billion in total consideration. The acquisition accelerates Sun's position in
| enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. Today's
| announcement reaffirms Sun's position as the leading provider of platforms
| for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source
| contributor says Sun.
