Unfortunately, most software vendors make money through proprietary
licensing and lock-in models, so "engaging in the development process"
is not quite as simple as it sounds.  

It's also an interesting aspect of people that when they've been
immersed in a particular community for a very long time, they often "go
native", forgetting that there could still be other communities out
there, ones which do not have the same values, structures, social norms,
governance and so on.
