Predictions that went right and wrong

,----[ Quote ]
| 4. Low-cost laptops won't take off
| Analysts were: Somewhat wrong
|
| Low-cost, inexpensive laptops such as the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) and
| Intel's Classmate PC, were said to present "no threat" to regular PCs,
| because analysts expected their stripped-down features to hamper the value
| and attractiveness of the devices.
|
| However, the niche market segment has attracted new entrants. Taiwan's Asus
| launched its eeePC late last year, a low-cost competitor running on Linux.
| The company shipped 350,000 sets in the last quarter, exceeding industry
| projections by some 50,000 units.
|
| In November 2007, the eeePC was also sold out on online e-commerce sites,
| Amazon and Best Buy.
|
| 5. Windows Vista will be secure
| Analysts were: Wrong
|
| When Windows Vista was launched, Microsoft platforms group vice president,
| Jim Allchin, described a platform where its "safety and security" will be
| the "overriding features" for which most people will want Windows Vista.
|
| Analysts from Gartner and the Enderle Group further touted Vista's security
| features, highlighting in particular its spyware-fighting prowess.

Enderle and Gartner. Two scummy Microsoft shills, with proven history and
payments from Microsoft and Bill Gates (individually). Allchin, by the way,
escaped as soon as Vista was out.

Windows Vista Has Another New Critical Vulnerability

,----[ Quote ]
| One of the updates is considered critical for Windows Vista and XP users

Critical Vulnerability in Microsoft Metrics

,----[ Quote ]
| This is a small subset of all the vulnerabilities, because the
| vulnerabilities that are found through the QA process and the vulnerabilities
| that are found by the security folks they engage as contractors to perform
| penetration testing are fixed in service packs and major updates. For
| Microsoft this makes sense because these fixes get the benefit of a full test
| pass which is much more robust for a service pack or major release than it is
| for a security update.

Skeletons in Microsoft’s Patch Day closet

,----[ Quote ]
| This is the first time I’ve seen Microsoft prominently admit to silently
| fixing vulnerabilities in its bulletins — a controversial practice that
| effectively reduces the number of publicly documented bug fixes (for those
| keeping count) and affects patch management/deployment decisions.

Beware of undisclosed Microsoft patches

,----[ Quote ]
| Forget for a moment whether Microsoft is throwing off patch counts
| that Microsoft brass use to compare its security record with those
| of its competitors. What do you think of Redmond’s silent patching
| practice?

Microsoft is Counting Bugs Again

,----[ Quote ]
| Sorry, but Microsoft's self-evaluating security counting isn't really a
| good accounting.
|
| [...]
|
| The point: Don't count on security flaw counting. The real flaw is
| the counting.

Microsoft Plugs Critical Vista Hole

Microsoft Patches Not One, But Three Vista Holes

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft today released an update for the recently popular 'animated
| cursor' vulnerability. The update was originally scheduled for April
| 10th, but due to recent exploits, was rushed out today. The update
| wasn't just for this one vulnerability though, in Vista, it addressed two
| others, and in all covered seven vulnerabilities in Vista, XP and
| 2000.

Symantec Finds Flaws In Vista's Network Stack

| fruit,' and that some are getting fixed in later builds,"
| said Friedrichs. "But that begs the question of what else
| is in there?"
