At MySQL, it's business as usual

| With Sun Microsystems announcing earlier this month that it had acquired the
| most popular open source database company, MySQL, there has been speculation
| aplenty, some of it grossly misinformed, on just how much change this will
| mean for staff at the small Swedish company.

| "Lots of MySQL employees are active within the community and have been
| encouraged to blog," he said. "This is not a closed company, what happens is

Dual License model: Future of open source?

,----[ Quote ]
| It is my strong opinion that open source software will become the dominate
| model for software development in the future. The only question left to
| decide is just how long will it take for open source to replace the
| traditional software model? The dual license model provides incentives for
| open source businesses to protect open source and at the same time allows
| them to make money from selling proprietary licenses. This model creates
| strong businesses that provide a lot of value to end users. Therefore I
| believe that the dual license model will accelerate the adoption of open
| source.

| known inelegantly as the LAMP stack: Linux, Apache, MySQL and PhP. They are,
| respectively, an operating system, a web server, a database and a programming
| language. They are all very powerful, open-source solutions that generally
| cost nothing.

Sun's MySQL Move: A Win-Win

,----[ Quote ]
| Gordon Haff, a senior IT advisor with consultancy Illuminata, has a less
| exuberant take on Sun's move. He sees it as a good thing for Sun as well as a
| great thing for MySQL.
