Run Linux? Save the World, Please.
,----[ Quote ]
| Last week, O’Reilly Media hosted the 2008 Open Source Convention (OSCON) in
| Portland, Oregon. The conference is described as “the crossroads of all
| things open source, bringing together the best, brightest, and most
| interesting people to explore what’s new, and to champion the cause of open
| principles and open source adoption across the computing industry,” and
| featured speakers from all over the open source community. The talks and
| panels are (of course) available online.

| Issues like privacy, transparency, and the open sourcing of software that
| plays out in the public domain are tremendously important subjects, but
| they’re equally tremendously unsexy. People don’t seem to want to learn about
| them, let alone fight for them. So, has it fallen to tech savvy citizens to
| step up, and lead society away from the potential pitfalls and abuses of new
| technology? Or have citizens got an obligation to educate themselves, and
| just pay the price if they don’t?

The next challenge after Microsoft et al are kaput:
Cloud Computing Could Invite Data Lock-In
,----[ Quote ]
| Web 2.0 initiative such as cloud computing and the programmable Web could
| take us back to the days of proprietary centralized systems, warned Tim
| O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media and the originator of the term "Web 2.0."
|
| While we think of the Web as an open platform, there is no guarantee that
| tomorrow's use of the Web will be based on open standards, O'Reilly said.

Hey You, Standarize My Cloud

| Rather it will arrive because it’ll be the means of differentiation for late
| market entrants; those that want to play in the cloud with the likes of
| Amazon and Google, though at a fraction of the scale.

| Perhaps the biggest question facing the potential standards players will be
| the balance between standardization and the speed of innovation. When we
| spoke with Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch about the opening of its SWF format, one of
| the questions we put to him was the potential for SWF to make the transition
| from open specification to formal standard. While not dismissing the
| possibility out of hand, his concern was that it might negatively impact
| Adobe’s ability to innovate within the specification. Standards need not be
| inimical to innovation, but neither are they designed to foster it.

Open Source Cloud Computing Service 10gen Gets $1.5 Million
,----[ Quote ]
| 10gen was founded by Kevin Ryan, previously the CEO of DoubleClick, and
| others from DoubleClick. DoubleClick has a massive part of the display
| advertising market online (and Google is trying to purchase it). Presumably,
| Ryan knows a thing or two about commercial efforts online. Despite the fact
| that 10gen's software stack is free and open source, hosting and customer
| service are fee-based.

Free and Open Source Software vs. Cloud Computing
,----[ Quote ]
| Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the point of proprietary network
| services (or cloud computing, or Software as a Service, if you prefer). Not
| when you have Free software as an alternative (“Free,” in this case, being
| analogous to open source or GNU/Linux).
