Christmas Comes In July For An Open ATI

,----[ Quote ]
| Many Linux users will be celebrating the Christmas holiday in five months,
| but it seems there's a holiday worth celebrating today for open-source ATI
| Linux users.
|
| [...]
|
| For open-source ATI users, the fun doesn't stop here today. The "quick and
| dirty" 2D branch of the RadeonHD driver has been merged to master. This work
| has been ported over from the Radeon driver and brings numerous (R500) 2D
| XAA/EXA acceleration improvements. In addition, the RadeonHD driver now has
| Textured Video support for the ATI R500 series.

AMD Releases New AtomBIOS Parser

,----[ Quote ]
| The package for this parser is called kgrids-atom and is made up of merely
| one C file and three header files. In total there are just under 1,400 lines
| of code.

Another reason to shun the Bribery King (and charity killer) Intel as well as
Nvidia, which ruins the Linux experience.

Linux Foundation points finger at Nvidia

,----[ Quote ]
| Though a statement issued Monday does not cite Nvidia by name, Linux
| Foundation Technical Advisory Board Chair James Bottomley cited Nvidia in a
| phone interview. "My intent is to point out the problems Nvidia has been
| causing themselves with their binary-only (drivers)," he said. "They are
| certainly one of the few companies sticking to a binary-only strategy."
| Binary-only means the drivers are essentially closed.

NVidia says no to request to release open source drivers, once again

,----[ Quote ]
| Nvidia reiterated that it won’t provide open source drivers for Linux because
| the company claims there is no need for it.
|
| Nvidia provides binary Linux drivers and has open sourced some drivers such
| as the nv X driver and other utilities that work with the proprietary driver,
| including the installer, config and settings. The company is a leading
| provider of graphics cards and software for the desktop and embraces a cross
| platform strategy.

Nvidia "opens can of whoop-ass" on itself

,----[ Quote ]
| Nvidia is going to lose gobs and gobs of market share this year. They are
| effectively out of notebooks, will lose the high end in days, don't have
| anything close to a competitive line-up, have higher costs than ATI, and have
| to shell out money to keep partners alive. If you think this is bad, wait a
| little.

Kernel space: drivers that don't make the kernel scene

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux supports most hardware "out of the box" without adding a driver. Most
| of the missing drivers are proprietary, from uncooperative manufacturers, but
| there are a few where the license is right but the actual code is still
| missing. Why?

Open-Source ATI R500 3D Milestone Reached!

,----[ Quote ]
| Coming just a day after AMD had opened up their production microcode from
| their proprietary drivers for the R100 to R600 GPUs, a significant milestone
| has been reached in the road to open-source 3D graphics capabilities for the
| Radeon X1000 (R500) series. We now have hardware-accelerated glxgears!

AMD Releases Production Microcode For All Radeon GPUs

,----[ Quote ]
| In the next step towards open-source 3D support for the R500 and R600 GPUs
| (Radeon X1000 and Radeon HD 2000/3000), AMD has just pushed its production
| microcode into the Mesa/DRM git tree. This is the microcode found in the
| fglrx driver and it covers the Radeon R100 to R600 product families.

Radeon vs. RadeonHD Drivers In H1'08

,----[ Quote ]
| On the other hand, the Radeon (xf86-video-ati) driver has been around for
| years and its product support originates with the R100 (Radeon 7200) GPUs and
| has been built up over time to support all Radeon (and FireGL) product
| families. Portions of this driver have been written with specifications ATI
| had released under Non-Disclosure Agreements for the R200 (Radeon 8500 -
| 9250) while other areas had to be reverse-engineered.

AMD Releases Additional R600 GPU Programming Documentation

,----[ Quote ]
| In the second NDA-free documentation dump, AMD has just released programming
| data on the M76 and RS690 graphics processors. While the RadeonHD developers
| have already had these documents, this information will help the free

New Approach To ATI Linux Driver Installation

,----[ Quote ]
| Starting next month with the Ubuntu packaging scripts for the ATI Linux
| driver, the --autopkg and --installpkg arguments will be supported. When
| using this new --autopkg argument, the Ubuntu packaging scripts will detect
| the distribution version, install any build-time dependencies for that
| distribution, builds the ATI Debian packages (the same as running --buildpkg
| manually), installs DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) and libGL package
| dependencies, and then finally installs the ATI driver packages.

Future AMD GPUs To Be More Open-Source Friendly?

,----[ Quote ]
| AMD is on the heels of releasing the next set of GPU programming
| documentation to aide in the development of the open-source R500/600 drivers
| (xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-radeonhd). It's already been discussed what
| this NDA-free documentation release will have, but one of the questions that
| have repeatedly come up is if/when AMD will release information on
| accelerated video playback. AMD's John Bridgman has now stated what they plan
| to release in the video realm as well as a new requirement for their future
| graphics processors: being open-source friendly while avoiding DRM.
