X Devs Drop NVIDIA Auto-Config Support

,----[ Quote ]
| Aaron Plattner's reasoning for this patch was that if the user has chosen to
| install the binary driver from NVIDIA for enabling 3D acceleration, it should
| be automatically used. It'd work out nice for a new user who wishes to use
| the binary NVIDIA driver to play games or use Compiz, but does it teach them
| anything about free software? David Airlie was the one that proposed this
| patch be reverted on the basis that there should be no auto-configure support
| for drivers that don't ship with X.Org.
|
| Daniel Stone had also added in that this patch is "partially pointless" and
| adds a greater burden onto the X.Org developers. Daniel's standing is that
| this patch shouldn't belong in the master development branch, considering the
| common ABI breaks with new X Server versions and the lag time it takes NVIDIA
| to support these updates. However, in the event the NVIDIA driver does break,
| it should proceed to load the (open-source) "nv" driver.

Bravo, X. Relevant insightful discussion here:

A hard problem worth solving

,----[ Quote ]
| Brian Aker pointed out in a blog discussion with Theodore Ts'o that there's
| not really a successful blueprint for taking projects open source. There are
| at least some "do's" and "don'ts", and an ability to analyze the many
| projects that have followed in the decade following the initial Mozilla
| release. But no one has had anything approaching a home run when it comes to
| both community and commercial success when opening up proprietary software.
| Some base hits, sacrifice flies, and strikeouts, but no home runs that I can
| think of.
|
| Corporate-originated open source (arguably "inorganic" software) has a much,
| much more difficult time keeping the core team aligned around open
| principles, because there's a much weaker selection bias keeping out open
| source skeptics in the same way that organic projects generally keep them
| out.

Kernel space: drivers that don't make the kernel scene

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux supports most hardware "out of the box" without adding a driver. Most
| of the missing drivers are proprietary, from uncooperative manufacturers, but
| there are a few where the license is right but the actual code is still
| missing. Why?

Linux Foundation points finger at Nvidia

,----[ Quote ]
| Though a statement issued Monday does not cite Nvidia by name, Linux
| Foundation Technical Advisory Board Chair James Bottomley cited Nvidia in a

| causing themselves with their binary-only (drivers)," he said. "They are
| certainly one of the few companies sticking to a binary-only strategy."
| Binary-only means the drivers are essentially closed.

Nvidia "opens can of whoop-ass" on itself

,----[ Quote ]
| Nvidia is going to lose gobs and gobs of market share this year. They are
