Venezuela Joins Line Appealing OOXML Standard Approval

,----[ Quote ]
| Venezuela has joined the list of countries that have lodged appeals against
| the adoption of an international standard based on Microsoft's Office Open
| XML (OOXML) file format.
|
| [...]
|
| By Monday, though, the IEC had relaxed its interpretation of the directive:
| Venezuela's appeal, although filed after May 29, "was filed within the two
| months of the BRM [ballot resolution meeting] closing so that it is being
| accepted. (The BRM closed on 29 March 2008 so the interpretation is that the
| last calendar day of May is being applied)," Buck wrote in an e-mail.
|
| [...]
|
| Computerworld Denmark reported Friday that Denmark filed an appeal with the
| ISO, although spokesmen at the IEC and ISO would not confirm that.
|
| "I have no confirmation of the Danish report and cannot comment further on
| that," the IEC's Buck said Monday.

Well, that's where corruption gets you. Microsoft went too far.

Venezuela and India appeal OOXML ratification

,----[ Quote ]
| Jesper Jerlang, the director of standardisation for Dansk Standard, the
| official Danish national standards body, told ZDNet.co.uk on Monday that
| Dansk Standard "did not agree" that processes had not been followed in the
| Danish OOXML voting process.

So Microsoft also ruined confidence in national bodies (in some cases
governments too, e.g. Poland, France).

The State of OOXML - Brazil Joins South Africa and India Against OOXML

,----[ Quote ]
| The chief executives of the two international bodies involved, the
| International Organization for Standardization and the International
| Electrotechnical Commission, will take a month to try to work out the
| complaints with the individual nations’ standards bodies. If the complaints
| cannot be worked out, wider committees of the two international bodies will
| take up the issues.

OOXML revolt brewing? Three countries appeal ISO approval

,----[ Quote ]
| India, Brazil, and South Africa are attempting to appeal ISO's fast-track
| approval of Microsoft's controversial Office Open XML (OOXML) format. The
| organizations representing those countries in ISO complain of process
| irregularities, lack of inclusiveness during meetings and debates, and
| insufficient time to address all of the issues and concerns raised by
| participants during the review process.

And there's still the BSI (in court) and EU investigations. This is bound to
blow up.

Microsoft OOXML: Dead Format Walking

,----[ Quote ]
| Since most Office users would be happy to continue using Microsoft's old
| binary formats, and since those for whom open standards are important would
| probably prefer ODF or PDF formats anyhow, I won't be surprised if OOXML
| quietly dies before that future Office iteration ever sees the light of day.

ISO Fantasy

,----[ Quote ]
| What OOXML Is · The ISO process, brutal and corrupt as it was, has been
|                 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
| covered to death by everyone. Its output, soon to be known as ISO/IEC 29500,
| differs from ECMA-376 in two ways. ¶
|
| [...]
|
| What Microsoft really wanted was that ISO stamp of approval to use as a
| marketing tool. And just like your mother told you, when they get what they
| want and have their way with you, they’re probably not gonna call you in the
| morning.

BE, NL: governments will not use ISO OOXML

,----[ Quote ]
| Asked to comment on last week's ISO approval for OOXML, Fedict's chief IT
| architect, Peter Strickx, said: "There will have to be multiple
| implementations, in order for us not to become dependent on a single vendor.
| It will also have to be compatible with open standards that we already use,
| in this case Open Document Format ODF."

DE: German Foreign Ministry will not use ISO OOXML

,----[ Quote ]
| In the weeks prior to the second round of votes last September,
| irregularities were reported in the standard committees in many participating
| countries. These claims continued until after the final discussion, in
| February and March this year.
|
| The European Commission has started an investigation into the allegations.
| The Commission sent a letter to all EU national standards committees in
| Europe, requesting information about the process. Sources at the Commission
| declined to comment, as the investigation is on-going and no official
| position has yet been adopted.

Software wars

,----[ Quote ]
| Allegations of committee-stuffing, the outcome of votes overridden by
| political appointees, a final decision that many involved consider tainted:
| this may sound like a discredited election in some third world country. But
| it is actually a description of an ugly fight over international technical
| standards that wrapped up this week. Microsoft came out on top, but at the
| cost of tarnishing its reputation and the credibility of an important
| back-room process that oils the wheels of many global industries.
