| The arguments that it may be too simple, not complicated enough, dumbed down
| Linux, Ubuntu copy, not-a-real-distribution, Windows lookalike etc, really
| belong in the past when developers were Hackers and Users were Geeks. The age
| of a real, usable Linux system for normal people has been born, thanks in
| part to Microsoft, and the desire of people like Clement Lefebvre to bring
| Linux to the masses means that there will have to be a special distribution
| arrive to prize Mint off my main Desktop PC any time soon. The bar has been
| raised, the gauntlet has been thrown down.
|
| Game on!

Compiz Fusion, Mandriva 2008.1 on AMD Phenom Quad-core PC with Demo

| I have seen several demo videos of Linux 3D desktops and have always
| considered doing one myself. After playing with Compiz Fusion for a while I
| decided to do one myself. I tried several different packages and none of them
| gave me a smooth video. I ended up using Istanbul to create the video in OGG
| Theora format then used ffmpeg to convert it to MPEG4. I wanted to show
| people the 3D desktop but I also wanted folks to see how easy one can do
| things from the GUI on a Mandriva 2008.1 system now. Mainly installing
| software and updates is as simple as it gets. See the demo to see what I
| mean: Mandriva 2008.1 Session Demo (MPEG4) 34,656,275 bytes

Compiz is Cool – and Why That Matters

| One of the most vexed questions within the open source world is when, if
| ever, GNU/Linux will take off on the desktop. Strangely, this isn't really
| about capabilities: as someone who has Ubuntu running on both of his main
| systems, I can attest to the fact that GNU/Linux is not just usable, it's a
| downright pleasure to use. In fact, I constantly marvel at how transparent
| open source has become: most of the time I'm simply not aware that I'm using
| it – it just works.
|
| This raises the interesting question: so what's missing? What more does open
| source need to do in order to capture the attention of the general user? I
| think the answer can be found on this YouTube video.

Compiz is the Most Important Thing to Ever Happen to Linux.

| If the Linux community wants to wipe Windows and Mac out of the OS business
| all they need to do in focus all of their collective efforts on developing
| Compiz. With the combine intelligence of hundreds of thousands of nerds we
| could develop the most pimped out windows management system known to mankind.
| The kids don’t want stability, they want an OS w/ rims that spin.
